Andy Malis, MGH

Testimonials

May 25, 2022

Andy Malis, CEO of MGH Inc., has seen a lot of changes in his industry since he launched the company in 1995.

Andy Malis was working for the biggest advertising agency in Baltimore in the early 1990s when he felt the spark to start something of his own. He persuaded co-worker Jane Goldstrom to join him to create their own ad agency focused on listening to and serving their clients.

In 1995, they launched MGH Inc.

Employee well-being was a priority at the new endeavor. Malis and his team started with one internal slogan: “The best place to work produces the best work.”

From the beginning, the company was flexible with allowing employees to work from home, permitted them to leave to pick up kids from school when necessary, and had them end the workday on time, all in an era when that level of flexibility was rare. Malis and his team strived to, “be reasonable and trust people,” he says.

It helped the company grow to 70 employees. The average tenure of an MGH employee is nine years, and several have been with the company for more than 20 years. They’ve seen MGH transition from offering traditional media almost exclusively through the shift to social media marketing to now looking toward the future of advertising in the metaverse.

Making a Connection

In 2018, Malis connected with PeoplesBank while working on the bank’s signage for the York Revolution baseball team’s stadium — PeoplesBank Park.

“From the beginning, the experience was completely different,” Malis says of working with PeoplesBank. “They really understood where we were coming from.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, MGH lost 25 percent of its business when its restaurant clients were forced to shut down. PeoplesBank helped MGH secure two federal Paycheck Protection Program loans. Not a single MGH employee had to be laid off.

Since then, MGH has made a strong comeback and recently relocated to a beautifully redesigned office at the Hunt Valley Towne Centre in Maryland. MGH was named the “Best Place to Work” by Ad Age in 2019 and 2020.

Through it all, sticking to the core principles of treating clients and employees with respect and trusting his workers has helped Malis build a business that he hopes will grow long into the future.
