Congratulations to the Northeast Neighborhood Association in York, PA on being one of our Redeem Your Dreams winners! They won $1,000 to put toward their dream of giving the entrance of their food and clothing pantry, Chrystal’s Place, a necessary facelift.
Northeast Neighborhood Association’s Story
The Northeast Neighborhood Association (NENA) serves the residents of York City by striving to improve the quality of life of community members through youth, hunger, and educational initiatives. Founded in 1996 as a food pantry, the organization has since grown to provide multiple resources for those in need.
NENA operates Chrystal’s Place, named in honor of the organizations’ founding director, Chrystal Sexton-McEachin. Chrystal’s Place is a resource center that distributes free food, clothing, diapers, and household items from its location at 216 Chestnut Street. Serving more than 600 individuals each month, NENA is operated by 1 staff member and approximately 20 dedicated volunteers.
In addition to the clothing and food pantry, NENA manages a community garden with 24 plots available for neighbors to grow their own fruits and vegetables. Unreserved plots are cultivated by volunteers to grow produce that is distributed through the food pantry. In addition to non-perishable food items, NENA is happy to distribute fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, and dairy products to encourage healthy eating habits.
NENA plans to use the $1,000 to refresh the façade of Chrystal’s place in order to make the entrance warm and inviting. It will benefit everyone they serve to improve the entrance railings and add new lighting for evening hours, making it a safer place to serve those in need. As an active part of the community, NENA is proud to serve York City and is grateful for the support of their many partners.
